ThermoWood® Aspen — in the market often referred to as Thermo Poplar — is a thermally modified wood species derived from the trembling aspen (poplar). It offers an excellent and environmentally responsible alternative to tropical hardwoods such as afrormosia and African padauk.

During the thermal modification process, the wood is heated to approximately 200°C in a low‑oxygen (inert) environment under controlled pressure. This treatment resembles a highly controlled steam process and permanently alters the cell structure, resulting in exceptional performance characteristics.

  • Qualities

Thermal modification gives ThermoWood® Poplar the following properties:

    • very high dimensional stability with minimal movement
    • significantly improved durability (durability class 1–2)
    • reduced moisture absorption compared to untreated wood
    • up to 70% less swelling and reduced shrinkage
    • excellent stability even under fluctuating weather conditions
    • lighter than tropical hardwood → easy to install
    • more cost‑effective than tropical hardwood alternatives
    • resistant to fungi and insects
    • warm golden‑brown colour that naturally weathers to silver‑grey
    • virtually knot‑free, ideal for façade cladding, gates and clean visual applications
  • Applications

ThermoWood® Aspen is suitable for a wide range of structural and aesthetic applications:

    • Façade cladding — stable, lightweight and knot‑free
    • Gate cladding — homogeneous and durable
    • Roof overhangs
    • Exterior ceilings and wall cladding
    • Garden buildings, canopies and outdoor structures
    • Interior finishing (walls, ceilings)
    • Light furniture work
